Looking Without Seeing

Rachel Carbo
Rachel Carbo

Rachel Carbo, a 23-year-old artist from Columbia, MD, is currently honing their skills as an oil painter while pursuing a B.F.A. in art - painting at Salisbury University. Alongside their primary focus on oil painting, they also enjoy exploring various other mediums such as photography and mixed-media works. Carbo sees art as a means of engaging with the mind and soul, allowing them to appreciate nature’s intricate details and delve into the realm of emotions. Having faced mental health challenges, Carbo turned to art as a source of joy and a tool for processing difficult emotions. Through their art, they find an escape from the complexities of society and a space for personal healing. Carbo aims to convey the importance of mental health awareness and hopes to spread messages of unconditional love and acceptance. Their ultimate goal is to help themselves and others navigate hardships and embrace joy.

Artist Statement

As an artist, I find joy in exploring various styles and techniques. While I deeply appreciate realistic representative work, I have recently delved into experimenting with surreal and abstract concepts. The healing power of nature is a profound inspiration for me, and many of my paintings reflect natural themes. Nature harmonizes with my exploration of emotions. Capturing beautiful moments not only fuels my creativity but also enriches my life. A significant portion of my work is dedicated to promoting mental well-being. Art serves as a vital outlet for self-expression and delving into the subconscious. The act of creating art is deeply human, representing an innate urge to bring something new into existence. I employ my creativity to introspect and to derive joy amidst life's chaos. This collection of work addresses themes such as chaos and being overwhelmed, isolation and fear, grief and growth, and the solace and delight found in nature.
