While I have worked on projects addressing a number of community social issues, the bulk of my research and community practice work entails action-research to bring full equality to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning (LGBTQ+) people. I take a strengths-based, liberatory approach to my work, and draw on a variety of methodological tools, including but not limited to photovoice, focus group, and qualitative interview methodology, as well as survey methodology. To ensure my work has broad and significant practical applications, I intentionally make sure it is accessible to wide audiences. One of the limitations of exclusively publishing in peer-reviewed journals is that the work has little to no impact in community settings. Community practitioners often lack access to peer reviewed journals, and many do not have the technical training needed to decipher and apply scholarship written for an academic audience. In order to address this concern, I intentionally place my work both within and outside of peer reviewed journals. This includes publishing op-eds, writing technical reports, and publishing in open-access journals geared towards community practitioners.
