Salisbury Symphony Orchestra Performs Concert 'Winter Holiday Is in the Aire'

Melissa HarveySALISBURY, MD---Guest soprano Melissa Harvey returns to perform with the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra at Salisbury University (SSO) during the concert “Winter Holiday Is in the Aire” 7:30 p.m. Saturday, December 8, in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Violinist Zachary Stachowski is guest conductor. He has served as the director of the Eastern Maryland Youth Orchestra at Washington College (Chestertown) and Broadneck Chamber Orchestra, along with various choral engagements. Frequently engaged as a music director of major national conferences, Stachowski has music directed for the Mid-Atlantic Congress, Music Ministry Alive! and the One Call Institute. Internationally, he has performed and conducted in halls and cathedrals throughout Mexico, Ireland and Austria.

Harvey first performed with the SSO in 2013. She has sung with the New York City Opera, Gotham Chamber Opera and Opera Company of Philadelphia, among others. Her roles have included Papagena in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), Testo in Monteverdi’s Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda (The Combat of Tancredi and Clorinda), Le Rossignol (The Nightmare) in Ravel’s L’enfant et les Sortièges (The Enchanted Child) and the title character in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors.

In concert, she has served as soprano soloist for Carl Barnett’s The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Hear My Prayer, Fauré’s Requiem and Bach’s Cantata 78, among others.

With the SSO, Harvey performs Antonin Dvorak’s “Song to the Moon”; “Alleluia” from Mozart’s Exulate Jubilate (Rejoice, Be Glad), K. 165; and holiday classics including Adolphe Adams’ “O Holy Night,” Pietro Yon’s “Gesu Bambino,” Bach’s “Ave Maria” and Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.”

The orchestra continues the holiday spirit with “A Mad Russian’s Christmas” (as performed by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra), a Christmas at the Movies medley and music from the animated hit film Frozen. The SSO also performs Bach’s “Sleeper’s Wake” and its featured selection, Ottorino Respighi’s Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite No. 2.

Admission is $25, $20 for seniors age 60 and older, $10 for 成人抖阴faculty and staff, and $5 for students and children 18 and under. Advance tickets are available and at the Guerrieri Student Union Information Desk.
