成人抖阴Student Earns Killam Fellowship to Canada

Lilia DobosSALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University student Lilia Dobos is trading Starbucks for Tim Horton’s this semester.

The Salisbury native has received a prestigious Killam Fellowship from Fulbright Canada to study at Lakehead University in Ontario through January 2019. The award includes a $5,000 scholarship and other allowances.

“I saw the Killam as a perfect opportunity to travel and experience the diverse culture of Canada while also continuing my studies,” said Dobos, a senior English major with a concentration in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).

“As an aspiring English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teacher, the fellowship will allow me to understand important aspects of teaching students with diverse backgrounds and how education is best received in those settings. I will be able to see that from my own professors and colleagues at Lakehead.”

Fulbright Canada is the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States. Its Killam Fellowship program provides opportunities for exceptional undergraduates from universities in the U.S. to spend a semester or academic year as exchange students in Canada.

“To our knowledge, Lilia is our first Killam winner, so this is a new fellowship for SU,” said Dr. Kristen Walton, director of SU’s Nationally Competitive Fellowships Office. “I am extremely excited for her success.”

Dobos will be based at Lakehead’s campus in Orillia, a city of about 30,000 located on the shores of Lakes Simcoe and Couchiching.

“I am most looking forward to meeting people from other parts of the world and trying the food from their homeland,” she said, adding that she hopes to learn “Canadian lingo and consume a healthy (or maybe not) dose of poutine (a dish of French fries, cheese curds and brown gravy) and Tim Horton’s (a popular quick stop known for its coffee and donuts)."

Fulbright Canada is a binational not-for-profit that identifies the best and brightest minds in both countries and engages them in academic exchange. Programs are open to individuals in various fields, providing support for research and study to build mutual understanding, grow intellectual capacity, increase productivity and shape future leaders.
