SU's Nabb Center Partners with Local Organizations for 'Lift Every Voice' Project

Guerrieri Academic CommonsSALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University’s Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture is partnering with Wicomico County Public Libraries, Fenix Youth Project, Inc. and the Salisbury Lynching Memorial Taskforce as part of Library of America’s “Lift Every Voice” African American poetry project.

The program aims to engage local teens with community members who can provide memories about race relations and racial injustice in the city and region.

Participants receive instruction on conducting oral histories and interview older generations in the community. Interviews take place in October and November, culminating in a group poetry workshop in early December, during which the teens will learn to create a community poem from the recorded interviews.

Nabb Center staff is providing guidance on best practices of conducting oral history interviews and compiling background research on topics covered in the interviews. They also will preserve the audio recordings and final products after the project’s completion.
