Friday December 18, 2020
Salisbury University Art Department faculty and students recently participated in operating the department’s blast furnace, melting over 1,000 pounds of iron for student sculpture projects. The furnace, known as a cupola, was built in 2015 by Bill Wolff, associate professor of sculpture, with student help. This semester, it was relocated from behind Fulton Hall to the University’s new 3-D arts building off Milford Street in Salisbury. Based on a late 19th-century industrial design, the cupola can tap 100 pounds of iron every 15 minutes at a temperature of more 2,300 degrees Fahrenheit.
