'The Fight Continues' in Presentation on Issues of Latinx Community

Dr. Isabel Quintana WulfSalisbury, MD---In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Salisbury University hosts the presentation “La Lucha Continúa: Latina/o/x Identities and the Ongoing Fight for Social Justice” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, September 15, via Zoom.

In this talk, Dr. Isabel Quintana Wulf of SU’s English Department discusses the heterogeneity of identities that are brought together under the umbrella term “Hispanic” or “Latinx.” She draws on the histories of immigration in the Latinx community, illustrating the different routes that migration to the U.S. has taken for different peoples.

The talk emphasizes the impact immigration routes have on Latinx experiences in the U.S. and the stakes of bringing together diverse communities under a single identity category. Regardless of which paths brought them to the U.S., Wulf considers how Latinx populations have faced similar difficulties in finding a place in the so-called “garden salad” of U.S. identities, where they encounter racism, social backlash and lack of access to living wages.

The discussion shows how encounters with these issues have led the Latinx community to fight for social justice, often through platforms based on working-class alliances such as the one behind the creation of the United Farm Workers labor union.

“Even though Latinx communities have been fighting for social justice for a long time, the fight continues to this day—‘la lucha continua,’” Wulf said.
