Nabb Center's Gifted Mural 'The Shoulders' on Display

Shoulders SALISBURY, MD---The Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture at Salisbury University recently received the mural “The Shoulders” by Greta Chapin McGill as a gift following its display at the Banneker-Douglass Museum in Annapolis.

“The Shoulders” is on display on the fourth floor of the Patricia R. Guerrieri Academic Commons.

The Banneker-Douglass Museum hosted an exhibition of local artists titled “The Black Vote Mural Project” with the theme of “African Americans and the Vote,” celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment and the 150th Anniversary of the 15th Amendment in 2020.

The exhibit explored the intersection of public art, Black voices and civil rights. At the close of the exhibition, the Banneker-Douglass Museum selected 15 organizations across Maryland that prioritize Black art and history as agents of change to be gifted one of the project murals.

“This mural illustrates the ideals of ancestry, racial heritage, the importance of engagement in the political process, and the knowledge of the legal steps in place to secure that right,” said Chapin McGill.

She explains that the “images depict the 13th Amendment to the Constitution - the abolition of slavery and involuntary servitude - and the 15th Amendment - the right of all citizens to vote without regard to race, color or previous condition of servitude. They come together to form Hiram Revels, the first African American senator; the 19th Amendment; Mary Church Terrell, Civil Rights and women's suffrage activist; the Civil Rights act of 1964 and the Freedom Riders.”

Chapin McGill studied painting and art history at Howard University and The Corcoran School of Fine Art.

Admission to see the mural is free and the public is invited. All attendees at Salisbury University indoor events are required to wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status. Attendees may be asked to leave an event for non-compliance.

All attendees must complete an online COVID-19 screening on the day of their visit, prior to coming to the 成人抖阴campus.
