SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University volunteers flocked to the beach for International Coastal Cleanup Day.

The inaugural beach cleanup event, sponsored by SU’s Recycling Department, drew over 100 students, employees and alumni volunteers to Assateague State Park, where they collected more than 115 pounds of trash.

For freshman environmental studies major Brynn Currier of Glen Burnie, MD, events like this and her student employment in SU’s Recycling Department provide hands-on experiences as she prepares for a career in waste management.

“As someone who has grown up in nature and loves the outdoors, I learned that it’s important to pay attention to the sustainability issues around the world, and I want to do what I can to solve those issues in my community,” she said.

SU’s Saferide, Support Services and Dining Services, and Wright’s Market of Mardela Springs, MD, donated resources and supplies for the event. Eighteen campus groups were represented.

“Concerning issues like water and beach pollution impact the communities surrounding our campus more than people realize,” said Currier. “Making sustainability efforts fun and at enjoyable locations is a great way to encourage people to get involved and do something as a group for a good cause.”
