McDermott Selected as Distinguished Visiting Professor at U.S. Air Force Academy

SALISBURY, MD---Dr. E. Patrick McDermott, professor and chair of management in Salisbury University’s Franklin P. Perdue School of Business, has been selected as a 2024-25 Distinguished Visiting Professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. 

McDermott will teach negotiation and constitutional law classes while assisting the academy in developing negotiation curriculum. 

Faculty selected for the program provide a range of duties in their fields of expertise, including developing and conducting courses and independent study projects for cadets; reviewing content of departmental courses in the visiting faculty member's area of specialty and recommending revisions, if appropriate; serving as a consultant to department faculty members and cadets engaged in faculty-sponsored research projects; performing educational research and contributing to research on current air force problems; serving as advisor to the department head; and performing such functions as assisting in curriculum development, participating in faculty committees, and other functions of educational leadership in the visiting faculty member's area of expertise.

A member of SU’s faculty since 2000, McDermott teaches business law, employment law, employee management relations and negotiation. He is a two-time Fulbright Scholar, teaching law for a year in Shanghai, China in 2007-08, and in Bucharest, Romania in 2018-19.  

His research focuses on workplace dispute resolution and he recently evaluated the use of virtual dispute resolution at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).  

McDermott has been the principal investigator on four EEOC mediation program evaluations, a State of California mediation program evaluation and was a co-principal investigator on a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) conflict resolution program evaluation. While in China he evaluated the Chinese Labor Arbitration Committee dispute resolution process. 

McDermott earned his Ph.D. from George Washington University, his Masters of Law in taxation from the New York University School of Law and his Juris Doctor from the Rutgers-Newark School of Law. He holds a B.S. in industrial and labor relations and a Masters of Science in collective bargaining, from the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University and an A.A. from Essex Community College of Baltimore County.
