Freeing Hostages From Lebanon Subject of Lecture

SALISBURY, MD---Giandomenico Picco, author of Man Without a Gun, discusses his personal account of the liberation of the Western hostages from Lebanon and the resulting cease fire between Iran and Iraq on Tuesday, December 11, at Salisbury University. His presentation, “Crossing the Divide: Dialogue Among Civilizations,” is from 2-3:15 p.m. in the Scarborough Leadership Center Ritual Room. The presentation is free and the public is cordially invited.

As an official of the United Nations Organization from 1973-1992, Picco is also noted for his representation of the Secretary General in the Geneva Accords as well as the Rainbow Warrior arbitration. He also served as an Under Secretary General for the United Nations and as the personal representative of the Secretary General for the United Nations Year of Dialogue among Civilizations.

A native of Italy, Picco was awarded the President’s Special Award for Exceptional Service in December 1991 for  his role in the release of the hostages.  Other affiliations include serving as the executive director for international affairs of the Montedison Group, member of the Secretary-General’s cabinet where he attained rank of assistant secretary-general and the peacekeeping force in Cyprus.

He received his graduate degree from the University of Padua, Italy in political science and a Master of Arts in international relations and comparative politics from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Picco, the recipient of numerous honorary degrees and awards is also a  contributor to numerous foreign policy publications.
