Sea Gull Century PrintExhibit October 7-28
class=""MsoNormal"">SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University celebrates the eighth anniversary of its commemorative Sea Gull Century prints with an exhibit of paintings and past and current prints at the University Gallery of Fulton Hall. A reception opens the exhibit from 5-8 p.m. Friday, October 7. The paintings and prints hang through Friday, October 28.
class=""MsoNormal"">This year’s print, from an original watercolor painting by 成人抖阴alumnae Nancy Mysak, features a Madone 5.9 bicycle from seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong’s 2004 U.S. Postal Service team in front of SU’s oldest building, Holloway Hall. The edition is limited to 950 and sells for $45 plus tax, benefiting SU’s Office of Cultural Affairs and Museum Programs.
class=""MsoNormal"">The exhibit features this year’s print, as well as past prints from artists F. Wayne Taylor (1998), C. Keith Whitelock (1999), Jack R. Schroeder (2000), Patrick Henry (2001), Lynne Lockhart (2002), Jinchul Kim (2003) and Paul Flexner (2004). Limited numbers of these prints are also available for purchase at half price.
class=""MsoNormal"">A native of the Whitehaven, MD, area, Taylor’s natural talent as an artist became apparent at age 8. Though he is largely self-taught, his work has been acknowledged in numerous publications and exhibitions. His images are admired for their subtlety of color, fineness of detail, nostalgic mood and complexity of composition.
class=""MsoNormal"">Whitelock grew up in Mt. Vernon, MD, among many of the images that have influenced his painting style. Receiving an art education degree from the University of Maryland in 1975, he favors painting weathered work boats, marsh scenes and Chesapeake Bay waterfowl. Since 1980 he has pursued a full-time career painting scenes of the Eastern Shore.
class=""MsoNormal"">A native of Poughkeepsie, NY, Schroeder moved to Chestertown, MD, in 1954. His careers in art include working as a contract illustrator for the Smithsonian Institution. In 1977 and again in 1980, he won the Maryland Migratory Waterfowl Hunting Stamp Design Contest. In 1990 he was appointed to serve on the Maryland State Arts Council, chairing the organization from 1997-1998. He passed away in 2004 at his home in Arlington, VA, at age 76.
class=""MsoNormal"">Born on Maryland’s Eastern Shore in 1952, Henry is one of the most recognized artists in the region and an alum of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Creating a bond between the artist, the land and the impact of regional culture on the Delmarva Peninsula, his work can be found in collections throughout the world. He lives and paints in Berlin, MD.
class=""MsoNormal"">An 成人抖阴alum and also a resident of Berlin, MD, Lockhart’s work in biology influenced her interest in the arts. Her paintings cover a range of styles that embrace an empathy and love of life. Her works have been published in numerous articles and used for illustrations in several children’s books.
class=""MsoNormal"">Born in South Korea, Kim came to the United States in 1989 and has lived in Maryland since 1996. He holds degrees in art from King Se-Jong University in South Korea and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He shows his work internationally at galleries in Korea, Japan, France, Spain and the United States. His paintings have been shown in 11 solo exhibitions and more than 75 invitational shows and group exhibitions.
class=""MsoNormal"">A native of Bronxville, NY, Flexner earned his M.F.A. in painting from Penn State University. He began his art career as an illustrator and syndicated cartoonist for Philadelphia newspapers. He also worked at Accu-Weather, Inc., in State College, PA, where his daily news, weather and sports graphics were syndicated throughout North America. His teaching career began at Bradley University in Peoria, IL, and continues at SU, where he has been an Art Department faculty member since 1998. He has exhibited internationally in Stuttgart, Germany, among other galleries.
class=""MsoNormal"">Originally from Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Mysak is a representational watercolorist. Painting in wooded areas, in fields, near waterways and in her Wicomico County studio, she interprets nature through art. Earning her B.S. in elementary education from 成人抖阴in 1972, she has taught children’s art classes in private and public institutions for the past two decades. Having studied with both local and nationally known artists, she has won several awards for her art. Her works have appeared in small group and solo shows throughout Maryland and Delaware, as well as in private collections in the area. In 1992 she earned the Maryland Alliance for Arts Education Arts Educator Award.
class=""MsoNormal"">The exhibit is held in conjunction with the 17th annual Sea Gull Century bicycle tour Friday-Sunday, October 7-9. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays and noon-4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The gallery is closed Mondays, weekends and all campus holidays. Admission is free and the public is invited.
