'Gospel at Colonus' Auditions Set December 6 and 9

SALISBURY, MD---Members of the local community are invited to audition for the critically acclaimed musical theatre work, The Gospel at Colonus, to be performed spring semester at Salisbury University.

Auditions are Saturday, December 6, from noon-2 p.m., and Tuesday, December 9, from 7-9 p.m., in Fulton Hall Room 130.  Robert Smith of SU’s new Department of Theatre and Dance directs, with musical direction by John Wesley Wright of the Department of Music.

“All those with a passion for singing are invited to audition,” said Smith. “Performers are asked to prepare a song from any musical tradition they feel comfortable singing.” An accompanist will be available as well as a CD player.  Solo, small group ensemble and choral roles are available in all voice ranges.  Small groups, e.g., quartets and quintets, may audition as ensembles.  No preparation is necessary for speaking-role parts.

The Gospel at Colonus, which premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1983, is not a traditional musical.  Melding Greek mythology with contemporary Christian musical tradition, it is more of a theatrical oratorio combining old and new gospel rhythm and blues and a touch of Motown. The music by Bob Telson, has won extensive critical praise in The New York Times and other publications.

Smith has been thinking about doing the production at 成人抖阴since the 1980s, when he saw it in New York.  “It’s a spirited work, telling a classical story in a contemporary way—a true celebration of the human spirit.

“We’re looking for as diverse a cast as possible; roles include a broad cross-section of individuals and ages. We hope this will be a grand coming together for our local and University communities,” Smith said.

Performances are February 26-March 2 and March 4-8.  For more information, contact Smith at rwsmith@salisbury.edu or 410-548-4777.
