Tickets Available for Oct. 17 Ballet Folklorico 'Quetzalli' de Veracruz Performance
SALISBURY, MD---With colorful costumes, vibrant music and exotic dance, Ballet Folklorico “Quetzalli” de Veracruz brings the history and culture of Mexico to life.
The acclaimed troupe performs 7 p.m. Sunday, October 17, in Salisbury University’s Holloway Hall Auditorium. The event is the culmination of SU’s Latino Heritage Month celebration.
Award-winning musicians from Grupo Tlen-Huicani, one of Latin America’s premier interpreters of folk music, join the dancers to provide an authentic flavor.
The troupe has earned accolades throughout the United States and beyond. According to The New Yorker, “With Aztec headdresses, twirling skirts, stomping feet and clanging knives, a Quetzalli performance offers moments of spectacle, but its charm is mostly low-key and friendly like that of a small-town fiesta.” The Kansas City Star says the group “offers up a heady rush of tapping heels, dazzling costumes and insistent rhythms.”
Founded in 1985 by Maestro Hugo Bentancourt, the company has performed throughout Mexico and the United States, as well as South America, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean. Notable venues include the Kennedy Center, the Miss Mexico Pageant in Cancun, TV appearances on Siempre en Domingo from Mexico City, the Festival Cervantino in Guanaguato, Mexico, and the Festival of Culture in Koala Lumpur, Malaysia. The company is celebrating its 25th year.
Sponsored by the offices of Cultural Affairs and Diversity, the public is invited and admission is free, but tickets are required. A limit of two tickets per person are available at the Information Desk of the Guerrieri University Center beginning Friday, October 1.
